The Islamabad district administration has imposed Section 144 ISLAMABAD for a period of two months, restricting public gatherings, rallies, demonstrations and processions across the federal capital. Authorities have also advised citizens to avoid participating in activities prohibited under the order and to cooperate with security institutions.

The order was issued by Additional District Magistrate Dr Anam Fatima on September 18, 2026, and came into effect immediately. According to the notification, gatherings of five or more people at public places are prohibited within the revenue limits of Islamabad, including the Red Zone. The restrictions also cover processions, rallies and demonstrations.

Why Has Section 144 Been Imposed?

According to the district administration, the restrictions were introduced after authorities received information that certain groups were planning assemblies and demonstrations that officials said could affect public peace, security and law and order.

The administration said preventive measures were considered necessary to protect life and property and reduce the possibility of disturbances in the capital.

The decision comes ahead of announced protest activity in Islamabad. Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) has announced a long march for September 27, seeking the release of its jailed founder, former prime minister Imran Khan. Kissan Ittehad has also announced protest plans in the capital.

What Activities Are Restricted?

Under the current order, the Islamabad administration has prohibited public gatherings involving five or more people, as well as rallies, demonstrations and processions at public places.

The restrictions apply throughout Islamabad Capital Territory, including sensitive areas such as the Red Zone. Residents and visitors have therefore been advised to remain aware of official directions while travelling or attending public events during the enforcement period.

The district administration has also stated that restrictions on public assemblies are being enforced alongside provisions of the Peaceful Assembly and Public Order Act, 2024. Authorities have warned that violations may result in legal action under applicable laws.

Authorities Urge Citizens to Follow the Law

Officials have asked residents not to participate in gatherings or activities that violate the restrictions and have urged the public to cooperate with law-enforcement and security institutions.

According to the administration, maintaining public order and preventing possible security problems are the main reasons for the restrictions. Authorities have indicated that action may be taken against individuals found violating the applicable orders.

Impact on Islamabad Residents

The enforcement of Section 144 could affect planned demonstrations, political gatherings and other large public activities during the coming weeks.

Residents may also experience additional security checks or traffic-management measures around sensitive areas if major demonstrations or marches take place.

People travelling within Islamabad are advised to check official traffic and district administration updates before travelling near areas where demonstrations or security measures are expected.

Political Context

The restrictions have been announced shortly before PTI’s planned September 27 protest march. The party says the demonstration is intended to press for the release of Imran Khan, who is incarcerated in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail.

The Islamabad administration, meanwhile, says its restrictions are aimed at maintaining public peace and protecting life and property amid the current security and law-and-order situation.

Conclusion

Section 144 will remain in force in Islamabad for two months from the September 18 order, unless authorities subsequently amend or withdraw it. During this period, gatherings of five or more people, rallies, demonstrations and processions at public places remain restricted under the order.

Citizens should follow official notifications from the Islamabad administration and law-enforcement authorities for any changes to the restrictions or related traffic and security arrangements.
